For asset owners and IMR project managers, the answer reaches beyond a video feed. It includes clear responsibilities, reliable communication, usable evidence and an agreed response when connectivity changes.
At Fathom 6, we are exploring how these elements could support a remote or hybrid subsea inspection model. This is development work, with suitability to be assessed against each project’s scope and operating conditions.
Define the offshore and onshore roles
The vessel retains operational control. Within that arrangement, qualified onshore inspection personnel could contribute to the inspection through live video and two-way audio, with responsibilities agreed before mobilisation.
A workable plan needs to identify who directs inspection observations, who records findings and how requests reach the offshore team. It also needs clear arrangements for escalation and decisions when the evidence is insufficient or the planned task cannot be completed.
In a hybrid model, the balance of offshore and onshore personnel should follow the work. Some activities may suit shore-based support; others may require inspection personnel offshore.
Keep the original evidence
A live feed supports communication and observation, while the inspection record needs a dependable evidence trail.
The approach we are exploring includes local recording of original footage and time-aligned inspection evidence. The aim is to keep observations, images and video references connected to the correct task and inspection location, so the material can be reviewed with its context intact.
Image quality, timing and the information available to the onshore inspector all need to be assessed against the inspection task.
Agree the connectivity fallback
The project plan should define what happens if the live connection becomes degraded or unavailable. That fallback needs to be agreed with the client, including which activities can continue, what must pause and who makes the decision.
Reviewing locally recorded footage later serves a different purpose from participating in a live inspection. Any fallback arrangement should make that distinction explicit, including its effect on inspection coverage and outstanding work.
Build around the campaign
Our focus is on developing an approach that fits the inspection scope and supports clear decisions offshore and onshore. Defining the evidence requirements, responsibilities and fallback arrangements is a practical starting point.
